Hardcore IPA

Name: Hardcore IPA
ABV:9%
Style: Imperial IPA (bills itself as an explicit IPA)
Brewery: Brew Dog
Nationality: Scottish

This is an explicitly hoppy beer, and bills itself as such. That said, this isn't the hoppiest brew I've ever had (I think Ruination takes the cake on that one), bu it is a punch in the tongue with the hoppiness. A very full bodied ale with hints of sweetness at the end that linger long past the final swallow.

Unlike a certain English writer, I don't quite get the toffee and chocolate flavors that he did, nor do I find this to be the bitter to end all bitters. What it did make me curious of was the oher offerings from Brew Dog, and will definitely be exploring their other styles.
Beer Log: Dark Island Reserve

Name: Dark Island Reserve
ABV: 10%
Style: Scottish Ale

Brewed in the Orkney Isles, this is a small batch ale that is hand bottled and then a small amount of that is exported out. From what I understand only 300 bottles a year are imported into the US.

This is a dark, mahogany ale, that smells of whisky. Of course, the fact that its aged in whisky casks helps, a lot. This was a very smooth ale that was almost dangerously easy to drink, especially at that 10%.

This is an ale that tells you up front "I'm a ale, you deft wee fucker." The malt is not hiding behind any hops, and is, in fact, pushed straight to the front of the flavor profile. This could almost be a winter ale, except, you know, in the Orkneys, where ale is what they drink when taking a break from whisky.

Hard to Find?

So someone that I went to grammar school with contacted zee wife at her work email account wondering if I was an "associate of hers" and if she could put him in touch with me.

I didn't realize that I was that hard to find, and a simple first name middle initial last last name search on google will pop up a couple of results related to me.

Maybe the crew from WAC is just that much smarter.... (also working in WAC's favor is that I still infrequently answer to certain nicknames that weren't truly established until high school).

YDC, Full-Time Gig, and Music

So I hit 10k words on YDC which means that I am 1/5th of the way through the project. I am taking a break from it at the moment, as I have two other projects that are demanding my attention.

In other news, my temping days are drawing to a close as I have been made a f/t offer for a gig. It's where I'm working now, mostly doing what I'm doing now so the big thing that will change is the amount of responsibility, the size of the paycheck, and once again having benefits.

As a complete aside, can someone please 'splain to me what the hell happened to "alternative" music? Did it really stall out in 1996 with but a brief foray into rap-metal that we are now all trying to forget about? Have the days of "movements" or "waves" ended so that all we are facing is a status quo of sorts? I am not going to say that its all recycled, but the simple fact that both Green Day and Rancid released albums this year make me feel like I'm back in high school. While this personally makes me happy, it also makes me wonder at the state of the industry.

Yes yes yes, I know that this could just very well be a reflection of the fact that my own musical tastes haven't truly shifted since I was 18, and there might be a very valid point in that. But! the fact that new music is still being made catering to my taste says a lot.

Looking for recommendations

So in light of the fact that I am taking YE DAMNED CONTEST (hereafter abbreviated YDC) seriously, I should actually sit down and read a romance novel.

Seeing as I have 0 (ze-ro) experience with the genre, are there any perennial favorites you would recommend?

Yes, yes, I should have done my research before I started writing, but I never really did that when I was an English major, so why start now?

Writing Competition

As some may already be aware, I've agreed to a writing competition against shogunsquirrel .

The details are that we are both to write a novel in the romance genre. There is a 50,000 word limit. There is a six month time limit. Neither of us has written in the genre before, though I have certainly included elements of romance novels in my own work. More to the point I think I've read all of one "romance" novel in my life, and that was a fairly placid Danielle Steele work that a then-girlfriend had me read.

I fully plan on either posting full chapters here or else emailing them out to interested parties. Really, I'm just looking at it as a writing exercise and am full aware of the knowledge that I do much much better with a deadline than without. The good news is that it isn't quite the time crunch that say NaNoWriMo is, and seeing as how I've found the self-discipline to sit my ass down and actually write again I'll be able to focus on the two other projects.

One of those projects is Nightshades, which saw a too long hiatus on my part but I am back picking away at. This week will see me hit the 1/2 way mark of 50k words. It also means I need to bring up ye olde outline and see what I had planned next and see if its still feasible.

The other is a working project called Seven Swords- a definite <strike>homage</strike> ripoff of the Seven Samurai. The difference here is that I'm doing all of the preliminary work in ye olde fashioned note book. The idea being that I might actually generate a real first draft that can then be edited as opposed to the ever-evolving first draft that tends to come out when I work in Word.
Part II of How I broke My Foot

When I arrived at the hospital, the doctors were kind enough to see that I was running out of my pain med drip, and hooked me up to a new one. They then told me they needed a x-ray of my foot. Last time I had injured my ankle, the urgent care center told me it was broken, but later an orthopedic told me it was just a bad sprain. So, I was hoping that was going to be th same case here.

No such luck. After getting my x-rays back, the emergency room doctor told me I had not just broken my ankle, but between my ankle and my foot I had managed to break five bones in multiple locations (i.e. there were more than five fractures). Moreover, due to the severity of the break they were going to have to operate. Seeing as my other option was the loss o use of my right foot (and my ability to walk), the operation sounded like a damn good idea. They did warn me that due to the severity of the swelling, they might not be able to fix anything with the first operation and it may be that they would have to wait a few days, then go back in and finish. Given the position I was in, well... I didn't exactly have room to complain. To my benefit though, I was at a clinic that specialized in winter sport related injuries. The best part? One of the bones I had broken managed to twist around 180 degrees. No, I don't know how I did that either.

This is also when I learned about German efficiency in emergency rooms. If they tell you that they are going to operate, they mean within that same day. They had me get changed into the gown and then I had to answer a series of questions before the surgery. Most were pretty simple, despite my lack of German and the surgeon's lack of English. What really killed it though was when they asked for my height and weight... in metric. Did I know that? Of course not. Could I even remember the conversion rates? Not at all. So I guessed. Turns out later that I guessed completely wrong on both. Ah well.

I was given a choice between general anesthesia or a localized that they would inject into my spine, numbing everything from the waist down. Despite my misgivings of general anesthesia, the alternative of being awake while they operated didn't sound very pleasant, so I opted for the general.

I don't remember too much else of that night. Kell told me later when she called the clinic to check to see if I was out of surgery, she was told that there had been complications and surgery was taking longer than expected. She was also told that there was the possibility of me ending up in ICU for the night. I didn't, and I did talk to her after the surgery. I don't remember anything more of te 31st, though Kell told me I kept telling her how much I love her. Worse things to say indeed.

Longer version of what happened to my foot (Part 1 of several)

For Christmas, Kelly and I decided to g to Germany to visit her folks (her dad works for USGov and is currently stationed there). As part of the trip, we were going to stay at an American resort located in the German Alps.

On December 31st, a decision was made to go sledding. Kell and I went up on a cable car together, and Kell, myself, her parents, her sister and her sister's fiance spent a few hours sledding which was fun, but not terribly eventful.

When it came time to head back down the mountain, it was decided that we would all slide down the mountain as far as we could, then walk the rest of the way down instead of taking the cable car. Did I mention that some of the tracks were closed due to being too icy?

I had made it about halfway down, and was going down one particular stretch when I hit an icy patch and lost control of the sled. At that point I had a couple of options. I could: A) roll of the sled and hope that I stopped without hitting anything B) try to stop myself against a tree or C) keep going into the forest potentially hitting multiple trees. I went with option A.

My mistake.

The first thing I realized was pain. A great deal of pain. The people I was with came to see how I was, and another family (German) came to make sure that I was ok. It became pretty apparent that I couldn't put any weight on my ankle, and I was not going to be able to make it down the mountain with someone pulling me. Kell gave a couple of Aleve, but I don't think they were too effective.

While Kell's mom, sister, and sister's fiance went down the mountain, Kell and her dad waited with me. They tried calling out to people on the cable car to get help, but I have no way of knowing if they did or not. Eventually another couple, hikers this time, came by, saw what happened and offered to assist. They had an emergency blanket, hot tea, and most importantly a cell phone. They were also native German speakers, and were able to call emergency services for me.

So there I am, laying on a sled, my ankle propped on my backpack, cold and wet and going into shock. Yes, I most likely went into shock. I definitely remember cursing a lot and being rather impatient that the EMTs were taking as long as they were.

It turns out, the reason it was taking so long was because the roads were iced over and they were having a hard time reaching the spot where I was injured.

When they finally did arrive they checked me over, told me they were going to give me "the really good drugs", and hooked me up to an IV. My foot, which up to that point had hurt worse than I think anything I had ever felt before, became completely numb. They then told me that they weren't going to be able to carry me back down the mountain due to the road conditions, but that they were going to have to call for a helicopter.

I didn's see the helicopter land (they covered me in a blanket so I wouldn't get snow in my face), and I didn't get to see any of the trip as I was flat on my back on a gurney. They did have just enough room for Kelly and one of the first responders in the helicopter, however, so Kell at least go to enjoy the ride a bit. I was still trying to delude myself that it was a really bad sprain, but the doctors at the hospital had other news for me...

Strange moments in commuting

So there I was, on the Orange line on my way to meet up with the wife. I was reading my book (Wicked), when the lady next to me taps me on the shoulder.

Me: "Yes?"

Her: "Are you Jewish?"

Me: Blink blink. "No."

Her: "Oh. Are you Greek?"

Me: Blink Blink Blink. "No."

Her: "Oh." Takes a long hard look at me. "What are you?"

Me: "Hispanic." I go back to reading my book, hoping that this impromptu census interview is over.

Of course, I should have answered "Irish" or "Canuck" or "Mutt" or even just plain "American," but I really just wanted her to stop talking to me.

Commuting time is not for conversations. It's a time to avoid eye contact, maybe catch a little sleep, and do some reading. Is that really too much to ask?

I should probably note that this isn't the first time someone's tried to guess my ethnicity and been terribly horribly wrong. My all time favorite is a waitress at a Japanese steak house asking me if I was 1/2 Japanese.

Bah!
Anyway, I've managed to read 23 of the books on the list.

Food, Glorious Food!

So Kell has gotten into the wonderful habit of buying me cookbooks. So have my parents. All this is well and good, and leads to me making tasty tasty things.

Kell and I have a decent system worked out- she browses through the cookbooks, picks out what she thinks I should make, and I, usually without thinking much about it, agree.

This is troublesome when I agree without actually looking at the recipe.

Case in point: Kell had picked up a pasta cookbook and thought I should make a recipe called Spicy Pepper Pasta. She tells me that I need one each of a red, yellow, and green pepper. "Okay," says I, jotting that down on a bit of paper. What I failed to realize until after having gone to the grocery store was what was needed was a yellow, red, and green capsicum peppers. When did I realize this? After I actually read the recipe. Le sigh.

(Also required was a third of a cup of fresh chopped coriander- which I didn't realize until flipping through the front of the book, is cilantro. I thought I was supposed to drop a whole bunch of ground coriander into the mix. See that, learn something new every day. Of course, I didn't realize that until after having already made dinner... It was quite tasty though).

Some of the cookbooks are also down right, well British, referring to things that may very well be available in your local British grocery store or local butcher, etc, but that are simply not available in our sadly lacking American groceries. Examples: duck breast (as opposed to whole duck, though one of these days I'm just going to buy one and carve it up myself and make tasty duck dishes) pheasant, venison, certain cheeses.

One cookbook in particular had me nearly foaming at the mouth. Cookbook in question: Gourmet Burgers. What is so wrong with that, you might ask? Their definition of "burger" encompasses things that I would never consider "burger," and diverges into realms like kabobs, phyllo wrapped patties, and other stranger, seafood concepts and chicken sandwiches. Not. A. Burger. Of course, then they have what I can only call a top-shelf burger. Burger on top of steak with foie gras, truffle oil, and slices of truffle. It probably costs as much to make four burgers than what I spend on groceries for a week. I cannot deny however that there are some tasty tasty recipes in that book. I've only made one so far, what called itself a Bulgogi burger. It wasn't actual bulgogi by any stretch of the imagination, as it used ground pork instead of marinated meat, but hey, any dish that uses sweet chili sauce can't be all bad. Course, there was the mango-coconut cream sauce that I made to go with it (we're talking cilantro, mint, coconut milk, two types of ginger, and assorted other goodness- like more chili sauce) that then all got cooked in a foil wrap (alas for me that I had no banana leaves).

Good thing I like spending time in the kitchen, huh?

Started on Next Segment: "Red Hair and Rune Blades"

So I've started work on the next Nightshades segment, tentatively titled "Red Hair and Rune Blades." While technically a rewrite of an earlier story with the same title, this one is going to be going in a couple of different directions. This is mainly due to that whole story arc that I'm trying to work in. The last segment had virtually nothing to do with the story arc, though I may go back and change a few things so that it ties in better. Right now, word count is just under 40k, though with a bit of effort "Red Hair" should push me over the 50k part. At least it better, since that will finally get me back on target as far as word count goals though.

"Red Hair" should be fun to write, as Helmut at least was always a bit of fun to write, even if he always had the depth of cardboard. At least he doesn't talk as much.

So why word count goals? Mainly to keep me writing. Even if I don't like it, the writing stage is not the time to be editing things, apart from basic continuity glitches. I am doing read throughs of pieces before emailing them to the reader base, but I am sure things are slipping through the cracks in a bad way. Chances are it is only going to get worse as time goes forward. On that note, I'm going to make a point of rereading what I did on "Nature of His Game" (i.e. segment three) to see where I left our heroes.

I also have no idea what the next segment after this is going to be, as looking back to my notes all I see is "placeholder" with no notes about what I want to put there. The good news is that this is only one of two places where "placeholder" appears, the other being the anticlimax. I'm also not terribly sure how good I've been about following my own set rules. I do not want to turn the respective characters into Marty/Mary Sues, and thus a good bit of the editing/rewriting process could well be toning down the uber qualities of our respective badasses.

Katanapunk fiction interest?

So a few years back I wrote a couple of interconnected short pieces that were to act as chapter intros for an RPG supplement that never materialized. I'm thinking of taking another look at them, polishing them some, and posting them here. I think there are five or six of them, and unlike the majority of my other work, has been relatively unseen. Fiction will be going behind the friends only screen since, well, I'm paranoid/careful like that.

Also- still picking away at Nightshades. At this rate, next segment will be done and emailed to folk by the end of the year.

School starts back up again today for me. Four hours a day, five days a week of learning and relearning all of the law I need to know to pss the Maryland State Bar Exam. The next three days will see me buried in Real Property Law.

Other things that are happening: Kelly and I are moving this summer to an as yet undisclosed location, though likely it will be in MD.
I still don't have a job lined up for the fall yet (though I am not going back to the old one- that ended May 18th). Also- going to Wisconsin (not this coming weekend, but the following.

Hmm? Other than that? Everyone is as well as can be expected, and though I've taken more time off than I've liked, I will finish writing the third Nightshades installment either this week or at the latest by the end of the weekend.
